Flumie training

  • The day begins by exploring the role of the flumie and how it interacts with the gong. You'll learn how to choose the right flumie for different instruments, understand the relationship between size and sound, and explore the practical differences between wooden and carbon fibre shafts.

  • Through guided demonstration and hands-on practice, you'll develop the core techniques that underpin confident flumie playing. We'll explore the relationship between pressure, speed and angle, helping you understand how small adjustments can dramatically influence the tone, sustain and character of the sound.

  • As your confidence grows, you'll begin exploring the more creative side of flumie playing. We'll work with overtones, layering, intervals and multiple gongs, while developing a more intuitive approach to listening and musical expression. The day concludes with guidance on caring for your flumies and gongs, helping you protect your instruments and support your practice for years to come.

The workshop unfolds slowly, combining expert guidance with hands-on exploration. Each part of the day has been thoughtfully designed to build your understanding, confidence and connection with the gong. The day is broken up into three sections:

Flumie training Workshop

Incorporating the B Love method

This workshop takes place at our purpose-built woodland sound studio in East Sussex. Designed for those looking to develop confidence with the flumie, this small-group workshop offers a practical introduction to one of the most expressive techniques in gong playing.

Combining demonstration with hands-on learning, the day explores how to draw rich, sustained tones from the gong using friction mallets (flumies). You'll learn the foundations of technique, develop control and confidence, and discover how to create evolving sound that can be integrated into gong baths, sound journeys and personal practice.

To ensure plenty of individual guidance, each workshop is limited to just four participants. You'll have unhurried access to our collection of professional-quality gongs and an extensive range of B Love professional flumies, with time to experiment, ask questions and develop a playing style that feels natural to you.

The workshop is open to anyone with a basic understanding of gong playing, from sound practitioners and experienced players to yoga teachers, meditation guides, Tai Chi and Qi Gong practitioners, breathwork facilitators and those working within holistic wellbeing. Whether you're introducing the flumie into your existing practice or refining your technique, the day provides a supportive space to deepen your understanding and explore the instrument with confidence.

No previous flumie experience is required. Simply bring your curiosity, a willingness to explore, and enjoy a day of learning, experimentation and sound. Refreshments are provided throughout the day with a complimentary vegan lunch.
